The last thing we did before the university booth left our office was wrap every panel separately, because a scratch on a co-branded wrap is a scratch the client sees every day for a year. It had taken months of planning to reach that afternoon, and most of those months were spent learning things no guide told us. This is the guide we wanted: how to build a photo booth that runs on its own in a public lobby, in the order the parts actually need to arrive, with the mistakes left in. It is not a parts list, because we already published one of those. We build our own machines rather than buying somebody’s kit, which is why we can write this and why it is opinionated.
How to build a photo booth, in one sentence
How to build a photo booth, stated once: an enclosure holding a camera, a light, a touchscreen, a small computer, a printer and a card reader, running software that keeps all of them working without a person standing there.
The parts themselves are on the equipment list. This page is about the order, because every guide lists the parts and almost none says what to buy first, and buying in the wrong order means a printer sitting in a box for six weeks while you wait for a cabinet.

1. The enclosure, before anything else you build
The cabinet decides everything downstream: which printer fits, where the camera sits, how the screen is angled, where the reader mounts, and how heavy the whole thing is. Decide it first.
Two questions from a venue’s facilities team will shape it. First, can it be moved? Our university’s environment, health and safety team approved the placement on the condition that the booth could be relocated if the fire marshal or a large event ever called for it. That condition put the machine on a base it can be shifted on, and it put us, not the venue’s staff, on the hook for moving it. Second, what does it plug into? One standard outlet, ideally, because a venue that has to run new power is a venue that says no.
Build or buy? We build. It costs time rather than money, it means the machine fits the venue instead of the other way round, and it means when something breaks we know where the screws are. If you buy, buy from someone who will sell you the cabinet without the software, because the software is the part you will want to choose yourself.
2. The computer and the software, early and together
Order the computer as soon as the cabinet is decided, and install the software the day it arrives. The reason is that you can build the entire guest experience, every screen, the strip layout, the payment flow, on a bare PC on your desk, months before the cabinet exists. By the time the enclosure is ready, the machine should already be a working booth with no cabinet around it.
3. The camera you build a photo booth around
Not everyone wants to build one. For venues, we handle the whole thing through permanent photo booth installation in Florida.
A Canon body, in our case an EOS R100, tethered over USB so the software controls it. What you are looking for in a booth camera is not image quality, which every current body has to spare, but controllability: the ability to lock white balance, drive mode, focus mode and image size from the software, and to disable everything that might wake up on its own. Wireless radios off. Auto power-off disabled. Single shot drive. A camera that decides to search for Wi-Fi at 8pm on a Friday is a camera that drops its tether.
4. The light
The light is the component most builders underspend on and it shows in the print. A guest’s face lit by the screen alone looks blue and tired. The light needs to sit near the camera axis, be bright enough to let the camera use a fast shutter, and be something a guest cannot reach.
5. The screen
A touchscreen, mounted at a height that works for a seated wheelchair user and a standing adult, angled slightly up. Every button the guest presses lives on this screen, so it is the interface, and the interface decides whether people use the machine. We learned at the university that guests hesitate about what to press first. It was invisible when we asked people and obvious when we watched them, so we added on-screen start guidance mid-week. 6. The printer
A DNP dye-sub, one per machine, loaded with 4×6 media that the printer cuts into two 2×6 strips. The printer post covers the choice. For a kiosk the deciding number is prints per roll, because it sets how often you drive to the machine.
Mount it so the media can be changed without removing anything else. Every service visit you will regret a printer that needs the screen out first.

7. The card reader and the bridge that cost us a week
A booth that charges the guest needs a reader that speaks MDB, the vending protocol, and a bridge that translates MDB to the computer. We run a Nayax reader through a Qibixx MDB-USB board. The reader is the easy part. The bridge was where we lost a week.

The board kept resetting. The reader would drop, the software would lose the payment channel, and nothing in the logs explained why. The cause was grounding: two jumpers on the board, J1 and J6, that need to be closed for the ground configuration we were using, and a missing jumper cap on one of them. A part that costs nothing, missing from a board that works fine on a bench, was the difference between a booth that took payment and one that did not. If your bridge resets intermittently, check the jumpers before you replace anything.
Set the reader up with the payment company before it arrives. Ours needed the account, the pricing and the device registration done ahead of time, and the reader’s own connection sorted. Most of the connectivity alerts we saw in month one were network drops, not the hardware.
8. The wrap, last of all
Last, because it is the only cosmetic step and because it is the one the client sees. Ours is co-branded in the university’s blue. It made the booth look like it belonged in the building rather than being parked in it, and a booth that looks like it belongs gets used.

What we would do differently next time
Test the whole machine for a week in the office as if it were live, taking real card payments, before it goes anywhere. A hardware fault in the opening weeks at the university cost us about twenty refunds. Every one of those was a guest who paid for a session and did not get one, and every one was avoidable with a longer bench test.

Yes, and it is a good first build for an attended booth or a venue that sponsors free sessions. Add the reader when the machine is charging guests.
When you build a photo booth, does software come before hardware?
It should be. The software determines which cameras, readers and printers you can use. Choosing hardware first and then finding the software cannot drive it is the expensive version of this project.
How long does it take to build a photo booth?
Months the first time, most of it waiting for parts and learning. Weeks the second time.
