You need less than most photo booth equipment list articles say, and more of one thing than any of them mention. The less: a full-frame camera, a second printer, a ring light and a backdrop kit. None of them is required to take money from a guest. The more: a way to keep the machine running when you are not there. That is not on any list I have read, and it is most of what I spend my time on.
What follows is the equipment inside our own machines, the unattended photo booths we build and place in South Florida venues. It is sorted into what you must have, what can wait, and what you can skip. Prices are September 2026 where I could source them. An event booth uses the same core and a shorter tail. So I have marked the parts that only matter once the attendant is gone.

Where it all goes

Capture: the camera is the least interesting purchase
A booth prints small, from a fixed distance, under constant light. Any current Canon body that your software tethers will do it, and the R100 is the cheapest one that does. Spend on the DC coupler and a good short USB cable before you spend on the body. Tethering drops and dead batteries cause more lost sessions than sensors ever have. Compute and interface: cheap, but not careless
A small Windows PC with an SSD is enough. What matters is the housekeeping. Set the power plan to never sleep. Switch off USB selective suspend so the camera port stays awake. Then run the booth in a kiosk mode that boots straight into the guest screen after a power cut. We run Windows Home on our machines, with keys bought for around twenty dollars. Because Home cannot host a remote desktop session on its own, we use AnyDesk to reach them from wherever we are.
The touchscreen is the whole interface. A guest who sees a Windows taskbar will eventually click it. The screen should show one thing: the booth.
Output: the printer decides the product
Why dye-sub
The guest pays for the strip. Everything else in the cabinet exists to get them to the strip, which makes the printer the purchase to get right. Dye-sublimation is the standard because it prints dry, fast and durable. The two DNP models you will see in most booths are the DS620A and the DS-RX1HS.

Those figures are from Eventprinters’ comparison of the two. For an unattended machine the roll capacity matters more than the speed. A roll that runs out on a Friday night with nobody there is a weekend of lost sales. Each 4×6 cuts into two 2×6 strips, so a 700-print roll is 1,400 strips.

Payment: the part event lists never include
An attended booth is paid before the guest walks up. An unattended one has to sell before it shoots. That means a card reader bolted to the front of the cabinet, and software that talks to it directly. The reader speaks MDB, the vending industry’s standard, and a small bridge board turns that into USB for the booth PC. Add a bill acceptor later if your venue skews cash. Housing: the cabinet is where the money hides
For an event booth, a shell or an open-air stand costs anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. For an unattended booth, the cabinet is a locked box. A guest cannot open it, a cleaner cannot unplug it, and a venue can wrap it in its own branding. We build ours, which is why it is the one line on this list without a price. It is also the line that separates a rental operator from a placement operator. I would not buy one until a venue has said yes.
Two small additions earn their space in either kind of housing. A surge protector, because a power blip during a print is a refund. And a UPS, because a power cut during a session is a refund and a confused guest at the same time.
What I would leave off the list
- A full-frame camera. A strip prints each frame a few hundred pixels wide. The extra sensor is invisible.
- A second printer. Buy a bigger roll instead. Two printers doubles the media you have to manage.
- A RAW workflow. Slower transfers, and nothing downstream needs it.
- A ring light. One diffused panel gives flatter, more even light on a group than a ring does on a single face.
- A 360 platform, at the start. I bought mine first. The printing booth I bought later outperformed it inside a week.
