How many photos go on a strip, three or four? That is the question people bring to photo booth strip design and it is the least important decision on the sheet. The important one is where the cut falls, because a 2×6 strip does not exist until a printer slices a 4×6 sheet down the middle, and a design that ignores the blade produces half a logo, a cropped face and a venue name that reads “SMILE” on one strip and “MORE” on the other. Here is how to design for the cut, the numbers to build at, and why we made the cut line the first thing you see in our strip builder.
Photo booth strip design starts with the sheet, not the strip
Dye-sub booth printers load 4×6 media. A strip is that sheet printed with two identical 2×6 columns and cut by the printer on the way out. Every rule below follows from that one fact.
It means the two strips are always identical, so a guest gets a matching pair to split with a friend. It means the centre line of the sheet is a hard edge. And it means anything you place near that line is gambling on the cutter’s accuracy, which is good but not perfect, and drifts a little as a roll runs down.

Build your photo booth strip design at the right size
Print resolution is 300 dots per inch. That gives you the pixel sizes to design at:

Design at those sizes and nothing gets resampled on the way to the printer. Design at a screen size and scale up and the text goes soft. Every strip that looks slightly blurry in the hand was designed too small.
Bleed, and the edge you cannot trust
Dye-sub printers print edge to edge by printing slightly larger than the sheet and trimming. That trim is a second edge you cannot trust, on top of the centre cut. The working rule is a safe area: keep every element you care about at least an eighth of an inch, about 40 pixels, in from every edge of the strip, and keep backgrounds running all the way to the edge so a slight shift shows more background rather than a white sliver.
Venue owners rarely want to design a strip. We do that as part of permanent photo booth installation in Florida.
Apply the same eighth of an inch on both sides of the centre line. That is a quarter inch of dead space down the middle of the sheet where nothing important lives. Backgrounds cross it. Logos, names and faces do not.
Three or four photos, decided by the room
Now the question everyone starts with. A four-photo strip gives each frame roughly 1.3 inches of height on a 6-inch strip after the header and footer. A three-photo strip gives each frame about 1.7 inches. The difference sounds small and it is not, because a booth photo is a face, and a face in a 1.3-inch frame is a small face.
Our rule: four photos when the booth is for groups and the poses are the point, three when the booth is in a venue where people mostly come in pairs and the print is a keepsake. On an unattended kiosk, three also means a shorter session, which means more sessions an hour.

Where the branding goes on a photo booth strip design
The header carries the event or venue. The footer carries the date and, if there is one, the booth’s brand. Two rules.
First, the venue’s name should be readable from across a table. Guests photograph the strip and post it, and the venue name on that post is the marketing. A tiny logo in a corner is a wasted strip.
Second, do not put anything the venue cares about within the safe area of the centre cut. Our co-branded design at the university keeps the school’s mark inside one strip’s safe area, twice, so each half is a complete strip on its own.

The strip builder shows both strips on the sheet and the line between them before you spend a roll.
Most tools show you one strip and let you assume the other. We show the sheet, both strips on it, the cut line between them, and a preview of each half as it will be held. Drag a logo toward the line and you see it split before you print a roll finding out. It also shows the safe area, so the edge trim is not a surprise either. That is the whole feature.
The cut itself is a driver setting rather than anything the software sends, and DNP publishes the drivers and the instructions for turning it on.

Can I use my existing Photoshop template?
Yes, at the sizes above, as a background layer with transparent windows for the photos.
Does a 4×6 postcard need the same care?
Less, because there is no centre cut. It still needs the edge safe area, and it still needs the venue name legible.
Should the two strips ever be different?
They can be, but the pair is the feature. A matching pair is what guests split. Keep them identical.
Does the strip builder change the printer’s cut setting?
The cut is a printer driver setting and the builder previews it; it does not move the blade. Set the driver to cut 2×6 and design to the line.
We are going to keep the cut line as the first thing you see in the builder, because the eighth of an inch above is a rule of thumb and the line on the sheet is the number that matters.
