Photo Booth Computer: What the Software Actually Needs, and What It Does Not

A photo booth computer needs five settings changed more than it needs a fast processor. What we run, what we changed, and the night Edge took over.

Our equipment list gives the booth computer a paragraph. It deserves a page, because the most common advice about a photo booth computer is to buy something powerful, and that advice is wrong in a way that costs money. Booth software is not demanding. It drives a camera over USB, composites a few images, sends a file to a printer and, if you use AI filters, uploads a photo to a server that does the heavy work somewhere else. A gaming laptop in a kiosk is a space heater with an RGB keyboard. What the booth actually needs is a small, boring Windows machine with five settings changed, and the settings matter far more than the spec.

The photo booth computer spec, in one paragraph

A current mini PC with a modern Intel or AMD processor, 16 GB of memory, a solid state drive, and at least four USB ports, running Windows 10 or 11 64-bit. That is the whole list. One exception worth knowing before you buy the cheapest refurbished box you can find: tethering a Nikon Z-series body needs Windows 11, while Nikon’s DSLRs and every Canon and Sony body run on Windows 10 as well. The processor tier barely matters.

The memory should be 16 GB rather than 8 because Windows itself eats half of 8 and the booth wants headroom during a composite. The drive must be solid state because a booth boots on power loss and a spinning disk turns a ten second recovery into a minute. The USB ports are the real constraint: camera, printer, touchscreen, payment bridge, and you have already used four before you plug in a keyboard to fix something.

No dedicated graphics card is needed. VertexBooth’s AI filters run on cloud services through your own API key, so the machine never does that work.

Photo booth computer: mini PC, laptop or tablet

Mini PC is the kiosk answer. It mounts to the inside of a cabinet, has no battery to swell, no lid to close and no screen to waste, and it costs less than the printer. Ours is a small Windows box that nobody will ever see.

Laptop is the rental answer. You are already carrying a bag, the built-in screen is useful for the attendant, and the battery covers you while somebody finds the extension cord. The trade is USB power delivery: laptops are stingy with power to their ports, and a camera on a hub off a laptop is the most common tether failure in the category.

Windows tablet is the option people ask about and should mostly skip. A Surface can run booth software, but it has two ports on a good day and the tether problem is worse than a laptop’s.

The five photo booth computer settings that matter more than the processor

None of this is a venue’s job. It is ours on every machine we run through permanent photo booth installation in Florida.

These are the changes we made to our own machine, in the order we learned they were necessary.

1. Power on after AC loss. In the BIOS. If the venue loses power at 2am, the machine must come back on its own when power returns. Without this setting, the booth sits dark until somebody presses a button, and nobody at the venue knows which button.

2. Automatic login. Windows must sign in without a password so the booth can launch. Pair it with the booth software in kiosk mode, which locks the desktop, so that the auto-login does not become a way for a guest to reach the Start menu.

3. USB selective suspend off. Windows, by default, cuts power to idle USB devices to save energy. On a laptop that is sensible. On a booth it means the camera vanishes after a quiet hour and returns as “not detected.” It lives in the advanced power plan settings and it should be disabled on every booth machine.

4. Sleep, hibernate and screen timeout off. The booth is the screen saver. A machine that sleeps between guests is a machine that shows a black screen to the next one.

5. Updates on a schedule, not on Microsoft’s. Windows Update will restart a machine in the middle of a session if you let it. Set active hours as wide as the operating system allows, and let the booth software handle its own updates on a schoolday morning. VertexBooth installs its updates on a schedule and never mid-session. Windows needs to be told the same thing.

The USB power setting is not our finding alone. LumaBooth’s own support page lists Windows USB power management among the commonest causes of a camera dropping.

The night Edge took over the photo booth computer

Here is why the fifth setting exists. Before we wrote our own software, our machine ran someone else’s booth application unattended. One morning the booth was not on screen. Microsoft Edge was, full screen, on a welcome page, because an overnight update had launched the browser on top of everything and the booth application was underneath it, running perfectly and completely invisible.

Nothing had crashed. Nothing had failed. A guest walking up saw a browser and walked away, and the machine had no way to tell us. That single morning is the reason kiosk mode in VertexBooth keeps the booth window on top, and the reason we treat “the machine can tell you it is down” as a feature rather than a nice-to-have.

That second half shipped this month. Each booth now writes a live status page into your own cloud storage, showing which screen it is on and for how long, the state of the camera, printer and card reader, prints left on the roll, uptime and the last faults, with a fleet page listing every machine you run, worst first. A booth that stops reporting reads as offline with a last-seen time, which is how a dead PC or a lost hotspot actually presents itself. Alongside it, twelve kinds of alert can go to your phone, each one a switch and a sentence you write. Ours are set so that the booth switching on, the printer running low and the booth stopping trading all reach a phone before they reach a guest.

You will need to reach the machine from your desk. Windows Home does not host Remote Desktop, so most operators use a third-party tool; we use AnyDesk on our own machine. If you would rather use native Remote Desktop, buy Windows Pro. Either way, install remote access before the machine leaves your office. Installing it after, over the phone with a venue manager, is a bad afternoon.

Buy a legitimate OEM Windows licence for each machine. It is a small line on a kiosk build and it saves you the activation watermark appearing on a guest screen.

The touchscreen, and the one thing to check

The guest screen should be a touchscreen. Buttons on a touchscreen are the whole interface of an unattended booth, and a mouse in a lobby is an invitation. Two things to check before buying: that the screen presents itself to Windows as a standard touch device without a driver, and that it stays calibrated after a reboot. A screen that loses calibration on restart will register touches an inch away from the button, which looks to a guest like a booth that ignores them.

Photo booth computer questions we get asked

Can I use the PC I already have as a photo booth computer?

If it runs Windows 10 or 11 64-bit and has the ports, yes. Change the five settings first. Most “the booth is unreliable” problems on an old PC are one of those settings.

Does the photo booth computer need internet?

To take a photo and print it, no. To take a card payment, deliver photos by text or email, run AI filters, or update itself, yes. A booth in a basement with no signal is a cash-and-print booth. [CONFIRM against the unattended post’s “does it need internet” answer so the two agree.]

Does the camera choice change the computer?

Only in one place, and it is the Nikon Z line needing Windows 11. Everything else on this page is the same whether the booth runs a webcam, a capture stick or a tethered body.

How much storage?

Photos are a few megabytes each. A 256 GB drive holds years of sessions. Buy the solid state drive for speed, not for size.

Should the machine be inside the cabinet or outside?

Inside, always, with ventilation. A computer outside the cabinet is a computer a guest can unplug.

We wrote this post from a cabinet that has been in a university lobby since August, and the settings above are the ones that kept it there. What we still do not have a good answer for is heat: a closed cabinet in a Florida summer with a printer and a PC inside gets warm, and we are still learning how warm is too warm.
