Photo Booth Printer: The One Component That Sets Your Cost Per Session

A photo booth printer decides your cost per session, your queue length and your refund count. The three DNP models compared, plus the 2x6 cut explained.

A student at the University Center took her strip from the slot last month, looked at it, and said to her friend “that was fast.” She did not say anything about the camera, the screen or the price. Camera quality and print speed are the two compliments our booth gets most, and the second one is entirely the printer’s doing. So this post is about choosing that printer. It sets more of your economics than anything else in the cabinet, and most guides on the subject come from the shop selling it to you. We sell software, not printers, so we have no stake in which one you buy. We do have a stake in you buying one our software drives well. So read the limits below with that in mind.

Why the photo booth printer is the economic centre of a booth

Every other line on the equipment list is a fixed cost. The camera, the computer, the screen and the enclosure cost the same whether you sell ten sessions or a thousand. The printer is the only component with a per-session cost, because every strip consumes ribbon and paper. It is also the only one whose speed sets how many people can use the booth in an hour.

That gives you two numbers to care about: cost per print and seconds per print. A third number, prints per roll, tells you how often somebody drives to the machine. On an unattended booth that is the number that actually hurts.

The three photo booth printer models worth choosing between

Nearly every serious photo booth printer in the United States is a DNP dye-sublimation printer, and the choice is between three models. The figures below are the published media specs, linked at the end so you can check them.

The RX1HS is the volume printer. Seven hundred prints on a roll carries an unattended booth doing thirty sessions a day for about three weeks. It is a little slower and a little cheaper per print than the DS620A, and it is the one most kiosk builders end up with for that reason.

Picking between the three

The DS620A is the fast one. Four seconds per print sounds like nothing until you have a line. At an attended event with a queue, a DS620A moves people through fastest. It also supports more sizes, so you can sell 6×8 prints later.

Media changes are our problem, not the venue’s, on every machine we place through permanent photo booth installation in Florida.

The QW410 is the light one. Thirteen pounds against thirty. That matters if you carry the booth up stairs, and not at all if the booth lives in a lobby. It pays for that weight saving with the slowest speed and the highest cost per print of the three. It is a rental operator’s printer, not a kiosk printer.

Mitsubishi and Citizen make comparable dye-sub printers and plenty of operators are happy on them. We have not run either in a booth, so they are not in the table.

Your photo booth printer cuts the 2×6 strip from a 4×6 sheet

This confuses new operators, so it is worth being plain. None of these printers loads 2×6 media. A photo strip is a 4×6 sheet with two identical strips printed side by side, and the printer’s cutter slices it down the middle on the way out. The cut is a printer setting, and the layout has to be designed with that cut in mind: a logo placed across the centre line ends up as half a logo on each strip.

That is why the strip builder in VertexBooth shows the cut line as you design. Perforated 4×6 media exists if you want a clean tear without relying on the cutter, and it is worth the small premium on a booth nobody attends.

What a photo booth printer costs you per session

Take our university booth, which sells a session at $7.99. At roughly 15 cents of media per 4×6, the print is about two percent of the ticket. The card processor takes more than that. In other words the printer is expensive to buy and nearly free to run, and the operators who lose money on it are the ones who chose a printer that jams, not one that costs a cent more per sheet.

That reframes the decision. Do not optimise for cost per print between two DNP models; the difference is a cent and a half. Optimise for how many prints sit on a roll and how fast it clears a queue, and buy the model that matches how your booth is used.

A booth can hold more than one printer, and until this month ours could not. The reason to add it is not redundancy, it is paper. If you want to sell 2×6 strips and 6×8 collages on the same night, you need two rolls, and a roll lives in a printer.

The rule we settled on is one sentence: everything prints on the default, unless a Print button or a print design names another. The design gets priority because the design decides the sheet. A 6×8 collage belongs on the printer holding 6×8 whatever button triggered it, and naming the printer once on the design routes every button that offers it. A single button can override for itself if you need it to.

Each printer keeps its own paper count, its own readiness and its own test sheet, rather than one count that got thrown away when you changed printers. The pre-flight check gained a real one here: it warns you before an event if a design is pointed at a printer that no longer exists, and flags it as serious if a design is sent to a printer that does not hold its sheet. That last check was impossible before, because the old one could only ask the default printer what it held.

If you already run one printer, nothing changes and neither picker appears until a second printer exists.

Photo booth printer questions before you buy

Which photo booth printer works with VertexBooth?

Any dye-sub printer with a Windows driver, because there is no vendor SDK anywhere in the print path and none is needed. The one attached here and tested against is a DNP DS-RX1HS. There is also a capability profile per model, matched on the driver name, that carries what the driver cannot tell you: the vendor, the media widths, whether it cuts strips and what that setting is called in its driver.

Can the booth tell me when the roll is low?

Yes, and as of this month it can tell your phone. Paper running low and paper used up are two of twelve alerts the booth can push, each with its own switch and its own wording. Before that they only wrote a line to a status page, which nobody is reading at the moment a roll runs out.

Should I buy a used photo booth printer?

Dye-sub printers have print counters and a rated life in the tens of thousands of prints, so a used DS620A with a low count is a reasonable buy. Ask for the count before paying.

Does photo booth printer speed matter on an unattended booth?

Less than at an event, because there is rarely a queue, and more than you think, because a guest standing at a machine with nothing on screen for twenty seconds assumes it is broken. Fast print plus a clear “printing” screen is the combination that stops walk-aways.

We will concede the part of this we cannot yet prove. Every printer above except the DS-RX1HS is in our compatibility list on the strength of the manufacturer’s own documentation rather than a sheet we have cut ourselves, and cut alignment is exactly the thing that needs a physical test. The hardware self-test screen exists so beta operators can run one and send back a report we can compare.
