You already know the marketing answer to the iPad vs DSLR photo booth question, because every iPad software vendor has written it: the iPad is cheaper, faster to set up and good enough. Most of that is true. What none of those articles says is when it stops being true, because the moment it stops being true is the moment you stop being their customer. That moment is the print.

Nobody buys a camera. They buy what comes out of the booth. So the real question is: what does your guest walk away holding?
If the answer is a text message with a GIF, the iPad wins and it is not close. If the answer is a 2×6 strip they will stick on a fridge, the calculation changes, and it changes because of light, not megapixels.
Our first booth ran on a webcam. It was fine in a bright room and unusable in a dim one, and most rooms where people celebrate are dim. An iPad camera is a far better sensor than that webcam, but it still has a small sensor with a fixed aperture, which means it needs a lot of light to make a print that does not look grey. You can solve that with a ring light. You can solve it more thoroughly with a camera that has a real sensor and a flash.

Three places, and they are real.
Setup time. An iPad booth is one device. There is no tether cable to fail, no camera battery, no printer driver, no Windows update. An operator can be shooting fifteen minutes after walking in.
Sharing. The iPad is a phone-shaped object with a cellular radio. Text and email delivery is native to how it works, and the iPad software category (Snappic, Curator, LumaBooth for Apple) has spent years polishing galleries and microsites because that is the product.

Entry cost. An iPad booth is cheaper to start, and the gap is not the camera. It is the printer and the computer that a print booth needs and an iPad booth can skip. We have broken the whole build down in photo booth business startup costs.

A Canon body in a booth produces a better image than an iPad in the same room. Everybody knows that. What decides the argument is a different property: a DSLR or mirrorless body works with a flash, and a flash makes light a variable you control rather than one the venue hands you.
That matters more for a print than for a screen. A phone screen forgives a muddy image. Dye-sub paper does not. A print with crushed shadows looks cheap in a way that reflects on the venue that hosted it, and that is why print-first operators drift toward DSLR bodies within their first year.
There is a second property, and it is the one that decided it for us. A tethered camera is controllable from software. Focus mode, white balance, drive mode and image quality all get locked from the booth application, and locked settings are what let a machine run in a lobby for a month without a person adjusting anything. An iPad decides most of those for itself, shot by shot, and it decides them for a phone photo rather than for a print. The honest middle of the iPad vs DSLR photo booth debate
The iPad vs DSLR framing is a little out of date. What most “DSLR” booths actually run now is a mirrorless body: smaller, quieter, better live view, and tethered over the same USB connection. Ignore the word DSLR when you shop and look for two things instead, a body on your software’s tether list and live view over USB so the guest sees themselves before the shot. What the iPad vs DSLR photo booth choice means for software
Building the Windows side?
VertexBooth drives Canon, Sony and Nikon bodies plus webcams and capture cards, on a one-time licence.
The camera decides the platform, and the platform decides the software. An iPad runs iPad software, all of it subscription. A tethered body on Windows opens up the one-time licence category, which includes Breeze, Darkroom, Sparkbooth and VertexBooth, and it opens up the possibility of a booth that takes payment on its own. You cannot bolt a bill acceptor to an iPad.
Which bodies tether is worth checking before you buy one, because the answer differs by tool and it moved this month. VertexBooth drives Canon over Canon’s SDK, and now Sony and Nikon over USB as well, both marked beta until a real body has been through them. Breeze, still the deepest Windows tool, is Canon plus video devices only; it sold Nikon software once and withdrew it in 2018. LumaBooth for Windows lists Canon, Nikon and Sony. Everything else in every tool arrives the same way, as HDMI out of the camera into a capture stick that Windows sees as a webcam.
That is the part of the decision the iPad articles leave out, and it is the part that matters if your booth is going to sit in a bar rather than at a wedding.

Can I start on an iPad and move to a DSLR later?
Yes, and it is the most common path. The templates will not carry over between platforms, so keep your print design as a flat file you can rebuild.
Does an iPad booth print at all?
It can, through AirPrint or a wireless dye-sub printer, and Curator and Snappic both support it. It is slower and less reliable than a wired printer driven from Windows. If prints are a nice-to-have, it is fine. If prints are the product, it is not.
Is a webcam a middle option?
For a budget kiosk in a bright space, yes. VertexBooth drives webcams and capture cards alongside tethered bodies, and a good webcam with a ring light produces an acceptable strip. It falls apart in dim rooms, which is where we started, and why we moved.
My camera is a Nikon. Is that a problem?
Less than it was. Every booth tool can take a Nikon through its HDMI output into a capture stick, which costs about thirty dollars and gives you a clean feed at video resolution rather than full stills. Tethering it for full resolution is rarer: Breeze retired its Nikon product in 2018, LumaBooth for Windows lists Nikon, and VertexBooth added Nikon tethering this month as a beta covering the Z series and the D750, D850, D780 and D7500.
What about a phone instead of an iPad?
Same category, smaller screen. The guest needs to see themselves clearly from four feet away, which is the argument for the iPad over the phone.
We built a Windows product, so we obviously landed on one side of this. What we still find ourselves asking is whether the print will keep being the thing guests want most as sharing gets better, or whether the answer flips in five years.
