You have bought the camera. Now what do you set it to? It has to take a good picture at one in the morning, after six hours on live view, with nobody there to notice if it has gone to sleep. Most guides to photo booth camera settings stop at ISO, shutter and aperture. Those three take five minutes. The settings that keep an unattended booth alive are in the menus nobody reads.
This is the photo booth camera settings sheet we use on the Canon R100 inside our own machine at Nova Southeastern University. It is split in two: the exposure settings you tune once per cabinet, and the housekeeping settings that stop the camera quietly switching itself off. Exposure: set it once, then lock everything
A booth has one enormous advantage over event photography. The light never changes. Once you have a constant LED panel in the cabinet, every variable that makes photography hard is gone. So the right exposure mode is full manual, and the right value for everything is “whatever looked good on Tuesday”.

Tune the shutter, aperture and ISO with a real person in the booth, then never touch them again unless the lighting changes. The white balance number matters more than any of the others. A slight shift in skin tone is visible when two strips from different nights sit side by side on a bar table.

Focus: pick one behaviour and remove the other
Two workable options. One-Shot autofocus with face detection on, which lets the camera confirm focus on the nearest face for each shot. Or manual focus, set once to the distance a guest stands at, with autofocus switched off entirely. Then it can never hunt in a dark cabinet. Both work. What does not work is Servo autofocus, which keeps adjusting during live view and occasionally fires a frame while it is still deciding.
Whichever you choose, tape the focus ring or disable the ring’s function in the menu. A cleaner’s elbow is the most common reason a booth’s framing changes.
Photo booth camera settings that keep the booth alive
This is the list that matters at one in the morning. Every one of these is on by default and every one of them will, at some point, take your booth offline.
- Auto power off: Disable. The camera will otherwise sleep after a few idle minutes and the software will report it missing. This is the single most important setting on the body.
- Eco mode: Off. Dims and sleeps the display and, on some bodies, the sensor feed.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: Off. Radios that search for a phone every few seconds cost battery and, in our experience, stability. Nothing in a cabinet needs them.
- Auto rotate: Off. A camera mounted on its side inside a cabinet will otherwise rotate every file.
- Image review: Off. Saves a second per shot and stops the body switching modes after each frame.
- Sensor cleaning on power off: Off. Adds a delay on every power cycle, and the booth PC may already be asking for the camera.
- Drive mode: Single shot. A burst mode sends the software more frames than it asked for.
- Date and time: set, and correct. File names and gallery ordering depend on it.
We learned most of these the expensive way, by watching a machine that was fine at ten o’clock report no camera at midnight. The camera never broke. It was doing what its defaults told it to do.
Power and the PC side
A DC coupler, the dummy battery that runs off a wall adapter, is not a setting but it makes every setting above meaningful. Without it, the body dies when the battery does and none of the rest matters.
On the Windows side, two things bite. First, USB selective suspend. Windows uses it to power down idle USB ports, and it will disconnect a tethered camera that has not shot for a while. Turn it off in the power plan, and set the plan itself to never sleep. Second, anything that steals focus. We once found a booth showing a browser window at breakfast because an update had launched Edge over the top of the booth software. Kiosk mode that covers the desktop is the fix, and it is why we built it into our unattended booth software.
One more, for anyone on third-party software. If your booth software polls a status page or web service on a tight interval, lengthen it. When we were chasing an intermittent crash on an earlier setup, the vendor’s own fix was to stretch a one-second poll to sixty seconds and reinstall. If you see unexplained crashes on a small percentage of sessions, try that before you blame the camera.

Settings that live in the software, not the body
Three decisions belong to the booth software rather than the camera menu, and they are worth knowing about before you tune anything.
- The capture frame size. For webcams and capture sticks, pin the largest size that still previews smoothly. Left to itself the driver picks whatever it feels like, and a 4K default will stutter while a 640 by 480 default will print soft.
- Live view versus full-resolution stills. A tethered Canon shows a video preview on screen and pulls a full JPEG when the shutter fires. Make sure the software is doing both rather than grabbing a preview frame as the photo.
- What happens when the camera disappears. The software should stop selling and show a deliberate screen rather than a frozen countdown, then recover when the body returns. Test this by pulling the USB cable, because it will happen on its own eventually.

Common questions about camera settings
What ISO should I use for a photo booth?
The lowest your lighting allows, fixed rather than auto. With a decent LED panel in a cabinet that is usually in the low hundreds. If you find yourself above ISO 1600, add light rather than accepting the grain.
Should a photo booth camera be on manual focus?
Either manual focus at a fixed distance or One-Shot autofocus with face detection works. Avoid continuous or Servo focus, which hunts during live view. Whichever you pick, make sure the ring cannot be knocked.
Why does my photo booth camera keep turning off?
Almost always auto power off or eco mode, both on by default. Disable both, switch off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and power the body from a DC coupler rather than a battery. If it still drops, check Windows USB selective suspend.
