Every Windows photo booth software you can still buy outright, what each really costs over three years, and the fees that scale with your success rather than your licence.

In June 2023 dslrBooth stopped selling licences and started selling subscriptions. In March 2026 it became LumaBooth for Windows. Operators who had paid once for version 6 kept the software they had, lost the cloud features, and stopped getting updates.

Nothing about that was unusual. It is where most software in this trade has gone. It is worth understanding what you are actually choosing between, because the monthly number is the least interesting part of it.

What you are really buying with a subscription

You are renting permission to use your own booth.

That sounds dramatic until the card on file expires while you are at a wedding. Or the vendor changes tiers and the feature you built your product around moves up a bracket. Or you take a slow winter off and the machine you own will not shoot until you pay again.

A subscription is not a payment plan. It is a switch somebody else’s hand is on.

There is a fair case for the other side, and you should hear it. Subscriptions fund continuous development, so those products often ship faster and support more cameras. If you run twenty machines and want somebody else carrying the maintenance burden, that trade can be worth making. Plenty of good operators make it.

But if you are placing machines that have to earn quietly for years, the maths and the control both point the other way.

Every photo booth software you can still buy outright in 2026

These are the Windows products that will sell you a licence rather than a subscription. Prices come from each vendor’s own pricing page, checked 4 September 2026.

For comparison, the subscriptions in the same market run from about 17 dollars a month billed annually up to 49 a month, and the iPad platforms run considerably higher. Over three years that is roughly 600 to 1,800 dollars per device, and at the end of it you own nothing.

We are not going to tell you the cheapest option on that table is the best one. Two of them cost less than we do. If price is the only axis you care about, buy RightBooth and get on with your life.

The number that actually decides it

Not the licence. The percentage.

Subscription products increasingly take a second bite: a platform fee on payments the booth collects, and a markup on every AI generated photo. Those are the fees that scale with your success, which makes them the expensive ones.

Charge Typical in this market VertexBooth
Licence or subscription 17 to 49 a month, per device One payment
Cut of payments the booth takes Up to 5 percent on phone checkout Nothing
AI generated photos 2.5 to 46 cents each, billed by the vendor You pay the AI service directly, at their price
Per session or per event fees Common on the iPad platforms Nothing

A booth doing 150 AI photos a week at a ten cent markup is 780 dollars a year going to a middleman for an API call you could have made yourself. That is the part that compounds.

What we do instead, and why

VertexBooth is one payment. No subscription, no cut of your revenue, no markup on AI.

AI filters run on your own account with the provider. You create a key, you paste it in, and you pay them their three to seven cents a photo with nothing added. You also set a spend cap per event and per day, so a runaway night cannot turn into a surprise invoice. When a cheaper model launches, you switch to it in a dropdown that evening and your costs fall. Under the subscription model, a cheaper model launching just improves somebody else’s margin.

The early access price is held for the life of your licence. We will raise it as the product gets better, and everyone who bought before the rise keeps what they paid. That is not a discount, it is the deal.

Where we would tell you to buy something else

If you need Nikon or Sony tethering today, buy Breeze or Darkroom. Ours is on the roadmap and yours is a booking next month. If you need video, 360 or more than one printer on a machine, we are not there yet either. If you run mobile events and want the biggest template library in the business, LumaBooth has it and it is not close.

We would rather lose the sale than have you find that out in week two.

You do not have to take our word for any of this

VertexBooth downloads free and runs unlicensed. Every feature works. The photos carry a watermark until you buy a key, and there is no card, no account and no clock. Build a booth with it this evening and judge it on your own hardware.

Questions people ask before switching

What happens to my software if the company disappears?

With a one time licence it keeps running. That is the honest structural advantage of owning rather than renting, and it applies to every product in the table above, not only ours.

Can I move a licence to a different machine?

Yes. A licence covers one machine at a time, and when you replace the PC the licence moves with you.

Do I lose everything when the 12 months of updates run out?

No. The software keeps working exactly as it did, with every feature, forever. Continuing to take updates after that is a choice, not a condition of the thing running.

Is early access another way of saying unfinished?

It means the product is young and the price reflects who is buying it now. Everything on the software page ships today and you can verify all of it with the free download before spending anything. What is not built yet is written down on the roadmap rather than implied in marketing copy.

Why not just use free or open source software?

If you can drive Python and a Raspberry Pi, projects like photobooth-app are genuinely good and cost nothing. What they do not have is card payment, a visual screen builder and somebody to email at eleven at night when a machine that earns money is down.

Weighing up a specific product? We have written honest comparisons against dslrBooth and LumaBooth and against Breeze Booth, including the cases where they win.
