Our first booth ran on a webcam, because a webcam was what sat on the desk that week. The prints came back soft in a way that is hard to argue with at two inches by six. Putting a Canon body behind the panel fixed it in an afternoon. Working out the rest took longer. The phrase “DSLR support” means at least four unrelated things, depending on whose page you are reading.
Shopping for DSLR photo booth software means settling that ambiguity first. It decides which camera you can buy, and how much of it you can control.
What the phrase actually covers
Sometimes the software drives the camera down a USB cable through the maker’s own toolkit. It sets exposure and pulls full resolution files off the sensor. Sometimes a capture stick reads the camera’s HDMI output. The software is then treating a five thousand dollar body as a webcam. Sometimes it means neither, and the page is describing a phone.
All of these produce photographs. They differ in what you can adjust from the booth, and in what the file is when it lands. Any DSLR photo booth software worth the name should tell you which of the four it means before you reach the pricing.
The bodies we drive down a cable
VertexBooth tethers Canon EOS bodies over USB through Canon’s own SDK. That route gives you full resolution stills rather than a video frame. ISO, aperture and shutter speed become settings inside Studio. They stop being dials somebody has to remember not to knock.
The one piece of housekeeping is that Canon’s SDK files have to sit beside the application. They come from Canon’s developer program rather than from us. That is a licensing matter on their side, not a technical one on ours.

Everything else arrives through HDMI
A Sony, Nikon, Fujifilm or Panasonic body runs its HDMI output into a capture stick. Windows then presents that stick as an ordinary video device. A GoPro gets there through GoPro’s own webcam utility. So does anything OBS is producing, if you are compositing something clever upstream.
This sounds like a downgrade and mostly is not. A clean HDMI feed off a decent mirrorless body beats any webcam comfortably. On a strip printed at two by six, the gap between that and a tethered file is small. The gap between good and bad lighting is much larger.
How we tether Nikon, and what beta means here
We built the Canon route first, and Nikon tethering has now shipped alongside it, covering the Z series and the D750, D850, D780 and D7500. It is labelled beta because it has been checked against Nikon’s own SDKs but has never run against a physical body. Breeze retired its Nikon product years ago, so a capture card remains the fallback, and we would keep one configured for a paid event.
Building a second tethering stack would take months. It would serve almost nobody. We would rather say that plainly than let you discover it after buying a license. Own a Nikon? Buy a capture stick. That is the same setup every other Nikon operator runs.

The setting that ruins more prints than the body does
Here is the unglamorous thing that costs operators more photographs than any camera decision. If nothing pins the capture format, the video driver opens the camera in whatever mode it feels like. A 4K webcam opens at 4K. That buries the booth under frames it cannot encode fast enough, and the live view stutters. An older one opens at 640 by 480 and prints something too soft for a strip. Both of those happened to us on the same machine.
So the booth always chooses. Left alone it takes the largest frame it can still encode on every preview. You can also pin an exact size. Pin a size the camera later drops and the booth reverts to the automatic choice. It does not refuse to start. Profiles get copied between booths, and the next machine’s camera need not offer the same modes.

When a profile names a camera that is not there
Point a profile at a camera this build cannot drive and the booth tells you so. It does not quietly open a different one that happens to be plugged in.
That is a deliberate choice and occasionally an annoying one. Silently substituting is how a booth runs a whole evening on the laptop webcam. The Canon sits behind the panel with its lens cap on. Nobody notices until the prints come out. A booth that refuses to start is a ten minute problem. A booth that starts on the wrong camera is a ruined event.
Questions before you commit a body
Where do Canon’s SDK files come from?
Canon’s developer program. They are Canon’s files to distribute, so you register and download them, then drop them beside the application. It is a one time step per machine.
Can I run live view and full resolution stills together?
Yes. The live preview feeds the on screen view while the shutter produces the full file, which is the point of tethering rather than reading HDMI.
Will a capture card cost me quality against USB tethering?
On paper yes, in a two by six print rarely enough to see. Spend the money on lighting before you spend it on closing that gap.
What frame size should I pin for a strip?
Open the hardware check, look at what the camera offers, and take the largest mode that holds a steady preview. The tool lists them because the right answer differs per camera and per PC.
Does the booth keep running if the camera is unplugged?
There is an interruption screen for a disconnected camera. Guests see something deliberate rather than a frozen countdown, and the booth recovers when it returns.
Where we would push back on ourselves
The fair criticism of our DSLR photo booth software is that its camera support is narrow. One tethered manufacturer is fewer than the established products offer. Standardized on tethered Sony? This is not the software for you today. No amount of explaining the capture card route changes that. We chose depth on the route most booths use over breadth we could not maintain. That trade is a real cost to some operators. Check it against your own kit rather than taking our word for it. The download is free, and the hardware check runs without a license.
