Darkroom Booth vs dslrBooth is a real comparison, unlike some pairings in this category. The two products have drifted apart, so the choice is clearer than it used to be. Darkroom stayed a one time Windows licence. dslrBooth became LumaBooth and moved to a subscription. So you are no longer picking between two similar purchases. You are picking between two different commercial models.
The commercial difference first
This decides it for most people, so it goes at the top.
| Darkroom Booth | LumaBooth for Windows | |
|---|---|---|
| Model | One time licence | Subscription |
| Price | $295, including 1 year of updates and support | $17 per month billed annually, or $49.99 monthly |
| After year one | $95 per year for continued maintenance, optional | The subscription continues or the software stops |
| Short term option | $45 for a 10 day licence, for existing customers with a down computer | Monthly billing |
| Platform | Windows 11 | Windows, with separate Apple and Android products |

What each is actually good at
Darkroom has a long history in studio and event printing, and it shows in the print handling and the template work. If your output is physical and you care about layout control, that lineage counts for something.
LumaBooth arrived from the mobile events side and carries that breadth: mirror mode, 360, glam, green screen and video guestbook in one product. Camera support is wider too, covering Nikon and Sony alongside Canon.
Neither is a bad product. They were built by different people solving different problems, and both have customers who would not switch.

Where both stop for unattended work
Here is the fact that matters if your machine will stand alone, and it applies equally to both.
Neither speaks MDB natively. Both can be driven by a payment acceptor through a relay, a pulse or a keystroke box. That hardware turns a coin drop or a card tap into something resembling a keypress. That starts a session reliably enough. What it never does is tell the software whether the payment succeeded, failed or was voided.
On a staffed booth that gap is invisible, because a person resolves it. On a machine in a lobby it is the difference between knowing your revenue and guessing at it, and it is why a guest can be charged for a session that the booth never actually produces.
The maintenance question nobody asks
Darkroom’s model deserves credit for being legible: you own it, and continued updates are an optional annual fee. You can stop paying and keep running.
A subscription cannot do that. However, a subscription does bankroll ongoing engineering plus staffed support, whereas an expired perpetual licence funds neither of those. There is no free lunch in either direction, and operators who claim otherwise are usually arguing for whichever they already bought.

Which to choose
Choose Darkroom if you are on Windows, you print heavily, you want to own the licence outright, and a person will be running the booth.
Choose LumaBooth if you want mirror and 360 modes without buying more products, you own Nikon or Sony bodies, or you work across iPad as well as Windows.
Choose neither if the machine is going to sit unattended and take card payments, because at that point the payment architecture matters more than everything above it combined.
Where we sit, stated plainly
We make VertexBooth, so read this with that in mind. It is Windows only, it is aimed at unattended machines, and it speaks MDB through a Qibixx bridge so the software receives an actual payment result. Licensing is one time at an early access price rather than a subscription.
It is also younger and narrower than either product above. Sony and Nikon tethering carry a Beta label, since we have not yet put a real camera body of either brand through it. Dye sublimation printers only. No video capture. If you need the breadth of an events product today, we do not have it.
Which one should you actually buy?
Most of the darkroom booth vs dslrbooth debate collapses the moment you name the venue. Answer three questions honestly, and the choice usually makes itself.
Will a person be standing next to the booth? If yes, then either product is fine, so pick on template workflow and on whichever interface your operators already know. Staffed events forgive a lot, because a human catches the failed print, the jammed roll, and the guest who wandered off mid session.
Which camera bodies do you already own? Both products are Canon first in practice. If your shelf is full of Canon glass, then that constraint costs you nothing. If you own Sony or Nikon bodies instead, verify support against the current version before you spend anything, rather than trusting a forum post from three years ago.
Does the booth need to take money by itself? This question ends the darkroom booth vs dslrbooth comparison for unattended operators, because neither product was designed around a vending payment loop. A staffed booth collects payment out of band, before the session starts, so the software never needs to know. Meanwhile a machine in a hotel lobby has to ask the terminal, wait for a real answer, and only then start the countdown.
Get those three answers on paper first. Afterwards, a hundred dollar difference in software pricing reads as noise next to choosing a product whose payment model does not match how your booth actually earns.

Frequently asked questions
Is Darkroom Booth still actively developed?
Yes, and its pricing page lists current versions along with upgrade paths from older ones.
Can either run a coin operated booth?
Both can be triggered by a payment acceptor through a relay or keystroke arrangement. Neither reads a payment result back.
Which has better camera support?
LumaBooth lists a wider set on Windows, covering Canon, Nikon, Sony and GoPro.
Does a one time licence ever expire?
Darkroom’s includes a year of updates and support, after which maintenance is optional. The software itself keeps working.
If the booth will run without staff, the payment layer is the decision. VertexBooth speaks MDB natively on Windows and sells as a single early access licence. Download it and test the flow.
