The question we get asked most often is whether there is genuinely free photo booth software for Windows, or whether free always turns out to mean a fourteen day clock that starts the moment you install it.
Fair question. Here is exactly what ours does, including the parts that are not free, so you can decide before you spend an evening on it.
What free means here
Download it, install it, run it. There is no account to create, no card to enter, and no countdown.
The booth runs its full guest flow. Screens, filters, the strip layout, printing, card payment, delivery by email or QR code, the gallery. Every one of those works before you pay us anything.
One difference exists. Photos come out with a watermark on them, and that mark stays until a license is activated. That is the whole of it.
Why not a time limited trial
Because a clock measures the wrong thing. Somebody evaluating booth software is not trying to use it for a fortnight. They are trying to answer one question: will this run my event on my hardware?
Answering that takes an afternoon for some people and six weeks for others, usually because the booth is being built around a camera that has not arrived yet. A countdown just means the second group re evaluates under pressure, or reinstalls on a fresh machine to reset it. Neither is a sale, and neither is a good look.
A watermark is honest about the trade instead. You get everything, guests can see the software is unpaid, and you pay when you want photos you can hand over.
There is a second reason, and it is less noble. We are early. Free photo booth software for Windows that runs a real event is the fastest way for us to find out what breaks on hardware we do not own, in venues we have never stood in. An operator who runs a trial and then tells us what went wrong is, at this stage, more valuable to us than their subscription would have been.
What the watermark touches
It goes on the finished photograph, after any filter and after any AI transformation. That ordering matters. An AI photo that skipped the mark would be the one path around it, so there is no such path.
What it does not touch is anything structural. Your screens, your layouts, your branding and your event settings are all real work, and none of it is throwaway. Activate later and the same profile carries straight on with the mark switched off from the next session.
What you can prove before paying
This is the part worth planning an evening around, because it is where a trial either earns confidence or wastes your time.
Run the hardware check and it reports what your camera actually offers, which formats it supports, and whether the printer is reachable. Turn on the simulated printer and you can run a hundred sessions without burning a single sheet of dye sub media. Switch on test mode and a stand in camera and a pretend AI service let you rehearse the entire flow at a desk, with no hardware and no spending.

An evening of testing, in order
If you only get one session with it, this is the order that answers the most in the least time.
Start with the hardware check. It lists what your camera really offers rather than what the box claimed. Pin a capture format here and most later disappointments never happen.
Turn on the simulated printer next. Dye sub media is expensive and a test evening can eat a lot of it. The simulated printer produces the same files and the same flow without consuming a sheet.
Then build one screen badly on purpose. Drag a button over the live camera view and see whether the software warns you. Ours flags when one element covers another, because that particular mistake is invisible in Studio and obvious to a guest.
Run the whole flow with test mode on. A stand in camera and a pretend AI service let you walk the guest journey end to end at a desk. Nothing is spent and no hardware is needed.
Finish with a real print. Switch the simulated printer off and put one strip through the actual printer. Paper handling is the single thing a simulation cannot tell you about.
When free stops being the right answer
The moment a paying guest takes a photo. A watermarked print is fine for your own testing and impossible to justify to a client, which is the honest boundary between the two.
At that point the license is 250 dollars once, at the early access price, and it stays with you. No renewal, no annual fee, no seat that expires while you are not looking. If you would rather test a real unwatermarked license on a live event first, there is a 60 day license at 35 dollars that does exactly that.
A perpetual license also keeps working if the booth never reconnects to us. A machine in a venue with bad wifi is a normal situation, not an excuse to stop printing.
Questions we hear at this stage
Is there a limit on how long I can run it unlicensed?
No. Run it for a week or leave it on a spare machine for a year. Nothing expires and nothing phones home to start a clock.
Can I remove a license and move it to another PC?
Yes. Removing it frees the seat and puts that machine back to watermarked mode, so a booth PC you are retiring does not strand your license.
Does the free version limit how many photos I take?
It does not. Session counts, print counts and gallery size are the same either way.
Will I have to rebuild my screens after paying?
No. The profile is the same file before and after, and activation changes one thing about how photos are finished.
What if the license check cannot reach you at all?
The booth falls back to watermarked mode rather than refusing to run. A machine that cannot verify itself still has an event on that evening.
One thing we are still working out
We are genuinely unsure where the watermark should sit. Put it somewhere discreet and testers forget it is there, then get surprised at handover. Put it somewhere unmissable and you cannot judge your own design underneath it.
Right now it leans towards unmissable, on the grounds that a surprise at handover is worse than an ugly test print. We are not certain that is right. If you run this against your own layouts and think we have the balance wrong, that is exactly the feedback worth sending, and it is the sort of thing an early license buys you a say in.
